Scenes
Scenes are the fundamental unit of production — every schedule day, prop, piece of equipment, and shot is organized around them.
What is a scene?
A scene in Studio Color corresponds to a scene heading in your script (e.g. INT. KITCHEN - DAY). Each scene has a scene number, a name, an associated location, a script day, and a production status that tracks it from unscheduled all the way through to completed.
Scenes are the connective tissue of the app — props, equipment, schedule days, and shots all link back to scenes.
Creating scenes
Via the Script Analyzer (recommended)
The fastest way to populate your scene list is to run the Script Analyzer. It reads your script PDF and creates all scenes automatically, including their locations, scene numbers, and script day information. This is a one-step way to go from blank project to fully broken down scene list.
Manually
Scenes can also be created and edited manually from the scene list in the app. This is useful for additional scenes added after the initial breakdown, or for projects that don’t have a final locked script yet.
Scene statuses
Every scene moves through a status lifecycle as the production progresses:
Unscheduled— Default state. The scene has not yet been assigned to a shoot day.Scheduled— The scene has been placed on a specific shoot day in the schedule.Shot— Principal photography on this scene is complete.Cut— The scene has been removed from the script or production plan.Completed— The scene is fully wrapped, including any pickups or additional photography.
Linking scenes
Scenes and locations
Each scene is tied to a location. When the Script Analyzer imports scenes, it automatically creates the location records and links them. You can also manually update a scene’s location from the scene detail view — useful when a location changes between drafts.
Scenes and props
Props can be assigned to scenes so the Art Department knows exactly which props are needed in which scene. When the Script Analyzer runs, it extracts prop mentions from action lines and links them to the relevant scene automatically. You can also add or remove prop-scene links manually from the prop detail page.
Scenes and equipment
Camera equipment can be linked to scenes to indicate what gear will be used for a given scene. This is managed from the camera equipment detail page.
Scenes and the schedule
When building the shoot schedule, scenes are placed onto specific days and, optionally, onto specific locations within that day. Once a scene is on a shoot day, its status automatically updates to Scheduled.
Current Scene — the live on-set view
During production, the Current Scene feature is the heart of Studio Color. It allows the script supervisor (or whoever manages the production floor) to broadcast to the entire crew exactly what is being filmed at any given moment.
Setting the current scene
Navigate to Current Scene in the sidebar. Click Change Sceneand select the scene you are about to shoot. Once set, all crew — web and mobile — see the updated current scene in real time.
What the current scene shows
The current scene view aggregates everything the crew needs to know about the active scene:
- Shots — The complete shot list for this scene with statuses.
- Props — All props linked to this scene, with their current status.
- Camera equipment — Equipment assigned to this scene.
- Location — The location for this scene, including scout photos and notes.
- Schedule context — Which day this scene falls on and surrounding scenes.
